چکیده

Proxies such as plant macrofossils, humification indices and testate amoebae have been developed to reconstruct past hydrological variability in ombrotrophic peatlands. Reconstructions based on these approaches have resulted in records of decadalto centennial-scale moisture variability in regions of North America and elsewhere. Although the various peatland moisture proxies generally show significant temporal covariance, multi-proxy approaches can refine knowledge of the multivariate nature of climate change and increase confidence in interpretations. Here, we demonstrate that ratios of the abundances of n-alkanes provide a new and efficient way of reconstructing past peatland surface moisture change. We found strong correlations among n-alkane indices, humification indices and testate amoebae-inferred water table depths from a single core. Biogeochemical proxies can be used in paleohydrological reconstructions for ombrotrophic bogs to provide a new and complementary source of data from these under-utilized paleoclimate archives. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Differential Hydrogen Isotopic Ratios of Sphagnum and Vascular Plant Biomarkers in Ombrotrophic Peatlands as a Quantitative Proxy for Precipitation-Evaporation Balance

We have developed a new approach to quantitatively reconstruct past changes in evaporation based on compound-specific hydrogen isotope ratios of vascular plant and Sphagnum biomarkers in ombrotrophic peatland sediments. We show that the contrast in H isotopic ratios of water available to living Sphagnum (top 20 cm) and in the rooting zone of peatland vascular plants can be used to estimate “f ”...

Associative nitrogen fixation in nodules of the conifer Lepidothamnus fonkii (Podocarpaceae) inhabiting ombrotrophic bogs in southern Patagonia

Biological N2 fixation (BNF) in the rhizosphere of Podocarpaceae is currently attributed to unspecific diazotrophs with negligible impact on N acquisition. Here, we report specific and high associative BNF in dead cells of root nodules of Lepidothamnus fonkii distributed in ombrotrophic peatlands of Patagonia. BNF of nodulated roots, intact plants of L. fonkii and rhizospheric peat was assessed...

Effect of peat decomposition and mass loss on historic mercury records in peat bogs from patagonia.

Ombrotrophic peat bogs have been widely used to evaluate long-term records of atmospheric mercury (Hg) deposition. One of the major aims of these investigations is the estimation of the increase in atmospheric Hg fluxes during the industrial age compared to preindustrial fluxes. Comparability of Hg accumulation rates calculated from density, peat accumulation rates, and Hg concentrations requir...

Bacterial and Fungal Communities in a Degraded Ombrotrophic Peatland Undergoing Natural and Managed Re-Vegetation

The UK hosts 15-19% of global upland ombrotrophic (rain fed) peatlands that are estimated to store 3.2 billion tonnes of carbon and represent a critical upland habitat with regard to biodiversity and ecosystem services provision. Net production is dependent on an imbalance between growth of peat-forming Sphagnum mosses and microbial decomposition by microorganisms that are limited by cold, acid...
